Today we are bringing to you, nothing more, nothing less, than the new Asus pearl!

We are talking of course about the Maximus V Extreme, a board of super excellence that brings maximum performance to the already famous Ivy Bridge!



The Maximus V Extreme is seen as the best bet for overclocking enthusiasts, as it has already happened with the socket’s 2011 counterpart his older sister Asus Rampage IV Extreme, after all we are talking about another Republic of Gamers (ROG).

The box in which the Maximus V Extreme V is “served” does not go much beyond what is already the usual for ROG models, but this time comes in pair with the Rampage IV Extreme, placing itself at the highest level of boards equipped with chipset Z77, as well as among all the models that have been produced for the 1155 socket so far!

The model in question presents itself full of accessories! In addition to the manuals “user guide”, our model has a rog connect cable, which allows us, through a pc laptop, to check and tune the settings of our Maximus, a  crossfire cable, sli cable, a 3-way  and even a 4-way sli bridges, all custom, 2 sata2 cables, 6 SATA3 cables, the board is paired with two wifi antennas, the usual q-connector kit, back plate, a pack of extensions to perform readings of voltages directly on board, a set of labels to identifying sata cables, the mandatory CD with drivers and lots of software and at last, but not least, an OC KEY!

We are facing a socket 1155 board,  intel’s bet for mid-rage pcs! In what regards the CPU we will be using an Intel I7 3770k, which provides  four cores, eight thread’s, 8 megabytes of cache and also the maximum multiplier of 63x !

Our model comes with the new Z77 chipset, which in addition to what his older brother Z68 offered we can add on support for native USB3.0.

Regarding memories, we can count 4 slots, supporting up to DDR3 Dual channel 32gigas and able to go beyond 2800mhz!

As for the versatility of graphics cards we can count with 5 pci-e slot’s 16x, when in sli we can count on 8x 8x, using 3-way SLI 8x, 16x, 8x and with 4-way sli 8x, 16x, 8x, 8x .

We have  8  internal sata port available, from which 2  (black) are sata 2 controlled by Z77 ,  as for the others(red) they are SATA3 being that two of them are controlled by the Z77 and the other two by ASmedial. Alongside with the SATA ports we have the subzero connectors sense, allowing us to use two k-type probes, capable of reading temperatures below -200 ° c.

Regarding network cards, it’s equipped with an Intel gigabit, which arise, as usual, on the rear panel along with 8 USB ports, 4 of them being usb 2.0 and the others 3.0, a PS2 output, sound card connectors, ROG connector together with the respective action buttons, reset button and finally the new Thunderbolt port!

The LEDs allow us to be aware of which bios we are using (taking into account that we have two available).

Apart from allowing us to change the bios in use, we can still count on another button of the same kind, nearby the 24pin power connector that allows starting when we haven’t the most appropriate memory timings or settings.

We also have the usual “Start”, followed by the reset button. Concerning access to Clr CMOS, a dear friend of overclockers, you can chose between the internal button or the usual rear panel button. Apart from the above we have several reading points and a few switches that allow us to turn off pci-e slot’s (can be very useful when we have two graphic cards and you just want to use one of them …)

Before going in to practical tests I don’t want to go by without mentioning that our model gives us two internal USB2.0 port connectors, and two more ports for USB3.0.


Subzero Sense Connectors

There is no better proof that this model was made to follow the footsteps of Rampage and once again comes wtih two K type probes … these probes can measure temperatures down to -200 ° C with a good accuracy … these readings can be found in bios, ockey and even by Asus Turbo EVO which is better than ever!

VGA Sense/OV

Not satisfied with the physical remission of the thermometer, asus allowed once again the possibility to control the voltages of two (or more) graphics cards in the same way as the previously mentioned probes !


This device has moved from the rampage series to the Maximus and makes it possible, once again, to make sure that in our screen we have always present voltage readings for both board and graphics! When we say always we mean it, even during a benchmark we can watch the vdrop’s, and temperature peaks through out the different components!


This new port dramatically increases performance with bi-directional speeds of 10Gbps and offers chaining multiple devices, there’s still a lot to hear about this new port for sure!

Asus has launched its ROG more elaborate model for socket 1155 and without doubt greatly elevated the level for high end boards  …

The model under review proved to be very consistent and we noticed the maturity of whom had already tested most of the offerings on the socket 2011, we didn’t encountered any incompatibility and neither did we have any difficulty running our machine, everything went perfectly smooth.

Regarding performance and based on the tests already performed in other models, we can say that the Maximus Extreme V is the board with higher performance tested by us between all the Z77 chipset based motherboards.

The price at which it will hit the market will be around € 360, taking into account all the perks that our model has and its performance, we dare to say that the price is not higher than expected.

But again we have to point out one of the weaknesses, also present in its sister, the switch that ensures the correct fixation of the first graphic card becomes quite inaccessible!

Taking into account the analysis performed and bearing in mind what for us are the points of relevance, we assign an award that is reserved for those who innovate and set the bar even higher!
